Summary

It is A.D. 792, a time of violent uncertainty. In Ireland, the Cross of Jesus vies with Thor's Hammer, the new ways of the Church clash with ancient beliefs. Bran Snorrison, carver of runes and composer of verse in the Viking town of Clontarf, has fallen in love with the village beauty and sets of on a journey to prove his worth in gold. But the fates have much more in store for him, and the young bard finds himself on an incredible trek across the changing face of the eigth-century world where old magics fight for life against the new Christian ways. Bran, accompanied by a mysterious girl who is more then she seems, explores the wonder of myth and the beauty of a world now forgotten. It is only at the end of his trek that Bran comes to understand the meaning of life, and even then it is an insurmountable puzzle to be examined across the centuries.
